Naxos is the biggest and most fertile island of the Cyclades

Naxos is the biggest and most fertile island of the Cyclades. Its rich geographical relief has created dramatic changes of scenery. High mountains, fertile valleys, plateaus, springs, rivers, caves, huge beaches, sand dunes with cedar trees growing on them, all existing harmoniously on this small piece of earth. Naxos has the cosmopolitan atmosphere of a modern tourist resort, but at the same time has kept its traditional colour and its local culture. Hora (the main town) is a harbour and the administrative centre of the island. It is a modern town, which offers all kinds of facilities. There are a Health Centre, banks, a very good market place and lots of restaurants, bars and cafes. Its has a lively nightlife, not only during the summer months, like most islands, but all the year round.

Trekking in Mount Zas..

At an altitude of about 1,000 m (1,001-1,004 m), the peak of Mount Zas is a popular trekking destination in Naxos. Mount Zas is the tallest mountain of Naxos island and also the tallest mountain of the Cyclades (1004m). Located 18 km from Naxos Town, it is strongly connected to the history and geography of the island. According to mythology, this mountain was the place were god Zeus, the chief of the Olympian Gods, grew up, haunted by his own father Kronus. In fact, the mountain was named after him (Zas). His son, god Dionysus, also grew up on the slopes on this mountain, in a cave called Cave of Zas.

Water Sports

Mikri Vigla is one of the most windy place in the mediterranean sea thanks to the Meltemi and to the Venturi effect generated by the compression of the wind in the channel Naxos-Paros. From June to September, the wind blows every day from morning till sunset, it's perfect for kitesurfing, windsurfing and wingsurfing !




Exploring Naxos Town (Chora)

Situated high on a hilltop and guarded by its Venetian castle stands the capital of Naxos – one of the prettiest in the Aegean Islands. It has a rich history coupled with beautiful architecture, narrow winding streets and plenty of character. There are several parts to Naxos town.
The old town is known as Kastro and is situated by the castle within the Kastro’s old Venetian walls. This part of town is car-free too which makes a leisurely wander easy.
The lanes from Kastro lead downhill to Bourgos to the west, which is where the Greeks lived during the years of Venetian occupation. Neo Chorio (New Town) is situated to the south and is where the island’s main port is located and many of the town’s restaurants, bars and cafés.

Archeology

Naxos is one of the few islands, which has been inhabited continuously since ancient times (end of the 4th millennium B.C.) till today. It has been possible to gather information about the history of the Aegean from traces left behind from each historical period, along with unique monuments which are scattered all over the island.
